River Hospital is pleased to bring Candice M. Monson, PhD, to Northern New York, as one of the foremost experts on traumatic stress and the use of individual and conjoint psychotherapies to treat PTSD. Dr. Monson is Professor of Psychology and Director of Clinical Training at Ryerson University. The two-day training session will take place on Friday April 15 and Saturday April 16, 2016 at Jefferson Community College in Watertown, NY.
About 10% of North Americans are diagnosed with PTSD in their lifetime, and most will have comorbid conditions (e.g., depression, substance use, dissociation). Fortunately, several highly effective psychotherapies exist for treating these conditions, which are recommended first-line treatments in current treatment guidelines. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is one such treatment. There are 4 primary stages to CPT: 1) Psycho education about PTSD from a cognitive perspective; 2) cognitive behavioral self-monitoring; 3) cognitive interventions specific to trauma appraisals; and 4) cognitive interventions aimed at overgeneralized beliefs emanating from trauma.
The two-day workshop is appropriate for healthcare practitioners and trainees in psychology, social work, nursing, counseling, medicine and related fields. Participants will learn:
■ The theory underlying CPT to inform individual case conceptualization
■ The evidence base that supports the use of CPT in treating PTSD and its common comorbidities
■ Recommended assessment strategies to determine clients appropriate for CPT
■ The session-by-session CPT protocol
■ Common challenges to implementing CPT (e.g., client adherence, managing comorbidities) and strategies for overcoming them
Continuing education credit is available for attending the training. The program offers 12.00 contact hours (6.00 hrs. per day), with full attendance required. Partial credit is not offered. There is no processing fee for continuing education credit. CE application forms will be available on site. CE verification is mailed to attendees following the event.
